NEW TRIANGLE-BASED LITERARY CENTER TO LAUNCH JUNE 2
— Announces Classes, Open Meetings and Inaugural Event —
Durham, NC, May 9, 2011— Formed from a passion to unite the myriad of talented writers in the Triangle, The Hinge is a new literary center and a collaborative community of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction writers at various stages in their careers with a common interest: a love of writing. In order to serve and connect the writing community, The Hinge will sponsor a website focused on Triangle writers and readings, offer a variety of classes, host literary events, and convene open meetings to build community. The Hinge’s first literary event, its official launch party, will be held on Thursday, June 2, beginning at 7 PM at the Pinhook in Downtown Durham.

The Hinge is an all-inclusive growing network that includes award-winner authors and writing novices alike, working together to build a more connected, inclusive and vibrant local community of writers and readers. Initially sparked from a small group of writers, The Hinge has grown to a group of 50 plus, and is still growing. The free launch event is open to the public and will feature readings by workshop instructors, contests with a grand prize of a free workshop of the winner’s choice, music, and the opportunity to learn more about The Hinge. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their published work—or the work of someone they admire—to the event to trade with local writers in the first Hinge Book Swap.

“There’s so much enthusiasm and talent for writing here in the Triangle,” said Ross White, a Durham-based poet and publisher who convened the first Hinge meetings after talking with local North Carolina writers at the recent AWP conference in Washington, D.C. “We want to connect the dots between the amazing institutions that already exist and create something new that invites
everyone to be part of a larger, more active, more open community.”
Initially, The Hinge will offer writing workshops in fiction and poetry, with a non-fiction workshop planned for Fall 2011 and others in development. The eight-week fiction workshop— held every Thursday, beginning June 16 from 7-9 PM—will be co-taught by short story writer Belle Boggs, winner of the Breadloaf Bakeless Prize, and novelist Anne Raeff, author of Clara Mondschein’s
Melancholia. The poetry workshop, taught by poet and editor of At Length magazine Jonathan Farmer, will be held on Mondays from 7-9 PM, beginning on June 13. Classes will convene at Outsiders Art and Collectibles in Durham, and the cost is $250.
